音楽とは何でしょうか。好きな曲を聴いて元気が出たり、気持ちが落ち着いたりする−多くの人にとって、音楽はそんな身近で大切な存在ではないでしょうか。日々の生活の中で、音楽に励まされたり、支えられたりした経験は、きっと誰にでもあると思います。けれども、音楽の世界はそれだけではありません。ある文化では祈りや儀礼と深く結びつき、また別の場面では人々の動きや時間を整える役割を担います。ときには、私たちがふだん「音楽」とは意識しないような音や、さらには静けさそのものを「音楽」と呼ぶ人もいます。人間関係の媒介となり、また、医療において意味をもつ場合もあります。つまり音楽とは、決まった一つのかたちを持つものではなく、異なる社会において生まれ、歴史とともに変化し続けてきたものなのです。だからこそ、音楽を学ぶということは、単に演奏や作品研究を深めるだけでなく、人間そのものや文化のあり方に目を向けることにもつながっていきます。

本研究科では、さまざまな背景をもつ音楽を横断しながら、多様な視点で音楽を捉えていきます。異なる関心や経験をもつ仲間と出会い、それぞれの考えを持ち寄ることで、新しい発見や問いが生まれる—そのような学びの場を目指しています。音楽が好き、もっと深く知りたい、という思いを出発点に、自ら問いを立て、探究を重ねていくことが大学院での学びです。本研究科が、皆さん一人ひとりにとって、自身の音楽観を問い直し、新たな知を切り拓いていく場となることを願っています。

Engage with Music—and Go Beyond

　　　What is music? For many people, it is something close to us and deeply meaningful—something that lifts our spirits when we listen to a favourite piece, or brings a sense of calm to our minds. Surely, everyone has experienced moments in daily life when music has encouraged or supported them. Yet, the world of music is not limited to this. In some cultures, music is closely connected to prayer and ritual; in others, it plays a role in shaping human movement and organizing time. At times, sounds that we do not think of as “music,” or even silence itself, may be understood as such. Music can also serve as a medium of human connection, and in certain contexts, it holds significance in medical and therapeutic settings. In other words, music does not have a single fixed form. It has emerged within different societies and has continued to change over time. For this reason, to study music is not only to refine one’s engagement with performance or musical works, but to reflect on the very nature of humanity and culture.
　　　In this graduate program, we explore music from multiple perspectives while engaging with diverse musical traditions and backgrounds. By encountering others with different interests and experiences, and by sharing ideas, new insights and questions emerge. Graduate study begins with a simple curiosity—a love of music and a desire to understand it more deeply. From there, it involves formulating one’s own questions and pursuing them through sustained inquiry. It is our hope that this program will become a place where each of you can reconsider your own understanding of music and open up new paths of knowledge.
